Today

No tatting for this post - I've been busy! I live in Northeast Alabama as some of you may know & we've had some terrible weather here the last few days. Thankfully, my family, friends, animals, & home are all okay. I'm so thankful & my heart goes out to all those around me that are less fortunate. As it stands, my sister & I are responsible for my father's 20 acres & all the horses, dogs, & etc that go with it. He works for a power company, as does my brother, & they're both working "can till can't" at the moment.
If you know someone who works for an electric company, do me a favor tell them Thanks. They're not like the military, but they're very important people! My brother was electrocuted & actually died & was brought back once a couple of years ago. He still has skin graft scars & a messed up tattoo. I thank God every day I still have him! I can't tell you how many times I've talked to my Daddy when he'd just come down off the top of a power pole in the middle of a driving storm. The go out & keep the lights on so you don't have to sit in the dark when it comes a tornado. Thank them.
ON a happy note, I have a FOLLOWER!!! Thanks Michelle!!
I also want to shoot out a Thank You to all the online tatters (mostly at Intatters that I know of) who are kind enough to be concerned about us Southerners right now. We greatly need your prayers, & I'm always overwhelmed at the outpouring of kindness from the Tatting Community!! Thanks my friends!!
Enjoy your day!

Seems all it takes is a little complaining...

Woke up this morning to a terrible storm - so bad that my little area of the world was on the Weather Channel! That never happens! Tornadoes & the like everywhere.... So here I sit with my little laptop at my Daddy's house across the road. I live in a single wide mobile home so it's supposedly safer here for both myself & the Untatter.
Now, the title I wrote has to do with the allergies or cold or sinus infection or whatever it is I have. I complained yesterday & feel much better today. Not 100% yet, but I'm headed that way! Woohoo!
Haven't gotten much tatting done, as it hurt my eyes too. I did work a little while last night on finding the perfect edging for the hankie I'm going ot make. Think I found it. I worked just long enough on my Mom's Pink Doily to snag my thread on the bobbin & have a black mark. Just one black stitch. And because of where the ring was, I had to cut the whole round off & start over, with 2 rings left in the round. So I promptly took a toothbrush & dish soap to the old Boye shuttle & started the round again. Fortunately, I was only on the second round so it wasn't that big of a catastrophe. Irritating, but not terrible.
Why use a metal shuttle if I know that at some point this will happen? Because I have as of yet not found one I like as well. Both for tatting & in my hands it just feels right. I have wood, plastic, bone, metal, horn.... combinations of all of these materials. And for some reason the old metal Boye shuttle with a bobbin & hook is my favorite. I have 4 of them & wouldn't trade them for the world. I won't buy any new ones because they're no longer made in the USA, & I have my own opinions of the moving of factories to places outside this country that we won't go into today. I don't have problems with those countries, i have problems with the US government taking away from its own people. Anyway.... Where was I ??
I keep plastic sew mates in my purse, & use clovers for smaller thread. I have one made by Rachel Moehler (sorry for the spelling) from teak wood, & one made of bone with leaves carved in it. I have one pop-a-bobbin by Jane Eborall that I like pretty well. But none of them measure up for making anything of any size & I'm not a continual small project kind of girl. So to me, it's worth the extra effort of having to clean them occasionally or risk black marks on my white thread. I don't tat with white thread that often anyway.
(stepping down off my soap box) Enjoy your Day!!

Ick...

Until this nasty cold or allergy problem or sinus infection goes away I won't be one the computer - it hurts my eyes to look at the lights on the screen..... It started on Easter, & has progressively gotten worse until i have no voice & I can barely breath for the sore throat & coughing. Can't tat either it hurts my eyes too bad. I'm serisously thinking of going the the dreaded "d" word (doctor).... If it's not better by the weekend that's what I'll be doing Saturday instead of my Mamaw's yard sale. I'm supposed to help her with getting rid of the final stuff out of her house but if I"m not better by then, I'll be at the doctor's office instead. Cross your fingers for me!!!
Enjoy your day!

Finally a break from the weekend....

It always feels like a kind of relief to finish up a holiday, doesnt it?? We spent Saturday sorting through & cleaning out my Mamaw's house so she can move in with her new husband. Wow at the stuff! 75 years is a long time to accumulate this'n'thats. Shes giving most of it away & my house is now spilling over too - & there is still a week'sworth of work to do! *sigh*
Sunday we did the family Easter thing at my Daddy's house. Mamaw & new husband, Us, Brother & girlfriend, Sister & boiyfriend.... The normal crowd. We dyed eggs too. That was fun - Sister's Boyfriend's 6 year old son, Z had never done it before so he had a better time than Untatter, who was the original intended dye experience. SHe kind of lost interest & ran off to crush a boiled egg before it was over. Then we hunted eggs with Z & Untatter. That was fun =-) After that, wwwaaayyyy too much food was consumed - I LOVE easter food... Better than Thanksgiving food by far.
Then a lazy afternoon. But wow was it needed. Husband worked Saturday night from around 8 until 5 30 AM, then got up at 7 for Untatter to dig into her Easter Basket :)
Wow, I'm glad it's Monday! Maybe I'll get some tatting done today - I'm going ot stop the presses & make myself a handkerchief, & that's that! I don't care if it's in style for somebody 25 years old or not. I'm tired of using random sand paper paper towels to wipe my nose during allergy season & I don't like the bandanas Husband & Daddy carry around with them. I'm going to make it to match the bazillion Blue Willow dishes my Mamaw gave me - I love blue & white together... It's beautiful!Blue Willow  Sorry, I messed up with my Link placement there :)
Enjoy your day!

What's on the Agenda For Today

Well, I *did* finish the Amusement Doily before the weekend!! I haven't managed to get it blocked yet, but it's finished & the ends are woven in. So here it is. It's done in Altin Basak #30. I lost the label so I can't give you a color number... Sorry :)

sorry for the picture quality. I'm no photographer!

Now. What's next? I started Nancy Tracy's "Mom's Pink Doily" last night for my "big project". Got the first round done before bed time. I have to confess, I have a serious love for her web site, Be-stitched . When I first got started, I signed up for her news letter & to this day I still get it every month. Now there are 2 - one for a recipe, one for a tatting pattern. She's also very kind & will help you when you need it. All you have to do is shoot her an email. The link for that address is on her site.
I also said I was going to start working on Celtic Tatting when I finished what I was working on. So. I started the first pattern in the book I showed before. It's a simple snowflake that's all chains that is proving not so simple for me. This is my progress from last night. The thread is a sample of Lizbeth I got with an order from Handy Hands. I don't know the color number, & to be honest when I got it, I thought it was an odd combination. But now that I've tatted some up, I kind of like it.

This is what mine looked like, in order of number of tries. 1,2.3. Still far from perfect.

This is what it *should* look like. Copyright Rozella F. Linden.
I'm also planning on making another hair pin for Brother's Girlfriend, Brit. It'll be red & brown, or brown & red, or one or the other. *sigh* Who knows??
So now you know where I'll be!
Enjoy your day.

On the computer when I should be doing housework....

Again.... *sigh* No pictures today, just thought I'd go ahead & drop by to say hello to the masses ;-) Nothing particular to report today, other than last night I had the first real chemicals *ever* put on my hair. And not even all of it!
I have curly hair. LOTS of curly hair. So Sister has this amazing hair dresser now, & I wanted her to "fix" the 1/2 curly, 1/2 not so much problem I have on my head. She cut it for me - I hadn't had a haircut in almost a year - & looked me over & said "This part here is the only part that isn't curling back up, hun. Maybe I could put a little curl in it, but the rest of it would just be wasting time & money."
So. Top layer was permed. Now anybody that's ever had a perm knows you can't wash your hair or put it up or anything for 48 hours. Yes, that's TWO whole days!! I did NOT realize this when I let her do this to me. I have GIANT, mid 90's hair. Not that it looks bad (can't tell yet, but so far I love the extra volume on top) or anything, just that I know I can't wash my hair for almost a whole nother day! I take a shower every day, whether I'm going somewhere or not, even if I'm sick or sore or whatever. I have to be almost dead to not take a shower. And wash my hair. I'm 2 hours into day one, & I feel like I've been camping for the weekend. Plus the wet dog slash chemical stink I can smell but everybody else says they don't.... Liars... =-)
Cross your fingers for me! I pray I'll make it 2 days & not ruin the new perm!!

Pictures from yesterday

Since I never could get all of my pictures to load yesterday, I'm going to see if I can post them today. I really don't have much to share today anyway so it kind of works out for the best.
The press I have to come up with a "cute flower" for.

The bracelet. I don't like how pointed the outside chains are. That blurry pink thing is Untatter's hand... Trying to snatch the bracelet off the counter.

This is the bobble I made to use as a closure. I keep trying to change them & it just isn't working out. May have to find a pattern....

This one is kind of blurry, but its the end. That's where the bobble has to go through. At the moment I have to have Husband put it on for me.
I didn't post yesterday that everything I've shown the last couple of days is done in Altin Basak number 30. There you have it. My computer is working better today apparently. On a slightly unrelated note - if there are any of you reading, I'd love for you to comment. I don't have any followers yet so I'd like to know if this is a pointless venture :)

Yay!

Okay. I had my entire post written out, ready for pictures, & Untatter hit some button that erased it all... So. Let me try this again....
I"m taking a break today from housework, as I'm so sore I can barely walk from this nifty little Tae Bo DVD I have. It's so fun, & it works everything everywhere! I've lost 3 lbs since Sunday! Go me! If it keeps going like its going I'll be where I should be in no time. 60lbs - 3lbs = 57lbs I have to lose... Seems like a lot but the small victories keep me going.
It adds to my excitement that yesterday the barrel pattern "clicked" for BayHorse & I... I can't wait to go back to things the way they were 6 years ago - where I can race again! Except now, it'll be more fun because Untatter has her very own pony =D
Now on to the tatting.... That's in the title of my blog right?? I actually haven't been tatting much lately. It's such lovely weather here & there's been so much to do that by 8:30 p.m. I'm so tired I don't feel like doing anything except laying on the couch & staring at the mindless crap on TV. Have also been having some issues with my fingers being sore... But we don't talk about that & maybe it'll go away! As example, I've been working on Celtess's Amusement Doily since the 2nd day of this month. Yeah - wwwaaaayyy slow... I know, but I'm on the last round & I should have it done by the weekend if I work on it every night. I promise I'll try. After that, I'm opening up Celtic Tatting, Knots & Patterns by Rozella F Linden.
sorry, I'm working on learning to rotate pictures...

I'm going to have to learn split rings to do it, but I feel like it's always nice to have another trick in my bag. I'm actually kind of ashamed at how long I've been tatting without knowing split rings. But at the same time, there's alot of lovely things to be done ring/chain/ring/chain, so I guess I'm not all that embarassed. I'm going to try everything in the book without them before I venture that far. There's only a butterfly I want to do that requires them, & I'm not sure I won't be able to find a way to "modify" it so I don't need them..... (evil plotting going on here)
Then there's the motif I told you about before... Still making those. I think I'm going to turn them into earrings or something... Maybe join & make a bracelet...? It's actually a practice piece from a book I found. I know my picots & all aren't even, but it was a "lets see how easy it is" try, & I wasn't making it for anything so I didn't care =-)

I also have to find a cute little flower to put in a press I found at Hobby Lobby. Turns out L bought one the same day I did & wants something cute in it......... No pressure....  Funny that people want my tatting, but don't want to learn how themselves.

Then there's the bracelet I've been talking about... The other picture is of the "bobble" I made as a closure... I'm not sure if I like it.

I haven't been working on hair pins, necklaces, bracelets, or anything I want to sell. I kind of burnt myself out on it. I also have a request for a modified version of the bracelet I made myself. Not so wide, beads in different places.... Actually a different bracelet. Also for L.... She's my biggest fan lol Seems I need to make a list so I don't forget! I'm off to do that!

I've been trying for 10 minutes to upload 3 pictures. Blogger is giving me problems. So I'll try again later...
Enjoy your day.

Monday..

Well, I can't remember if I promised you pictures today or not, but I don't have any. Well I have things to take pictures of, I just don't have it done. I blame the weather. It's gorgeous weather here in Alabama... today its around 70 degrees, & the sun is shining like you wouldn't believe. Same as yesterday. I got burnt yesterday (I"m a redhead) while I was riding Chico, & plan to do so again today :) Sorry, I should have started this by saying, " Springtime makes it hard for me to concentrate on the computer." Ohhh I do love this time of year.. Springtime is my favorite :)

Friday

It's Friday... I hear I'm supposed to be glad the weekend is here, so I'll say I am :) I have pictures taken & ready to post, but I'm not going to today. I can't remember where I put my camera & I'm really not in the mood to look for it. I'm not in the mood for much of anything today. It's all stormy & nasty outside & at the moment I'm putting off balancing my checkbook & paying bills for the week. Isn't that always a wonderful job?
I did get to ride yesterday & the day before. I'm telling you if you've never ridden you should try it - there's not much in the world that makes me as happy as riding. Before I got married & had my daughter I barrel raced. Not at rodeos but NBHA (National Barrel Horse Association). Loved it. I'm trying to get back into it, but I've got 60+ pounds to lose & a horse to train.
The horse part won't be hard; he's a smart little cow bred Quarter Horse. If you care, he's a grandson of Mr. San Peppy on both sides. He's a sweetheart. And about a month ago I realized he runs better to the left than the right.... I'm left handed, but I've always ridden to the right. I guess because most people do. Before I had Chico (that was his name when I got him) I rode an Arabian mare that would do it either way or upside down on her ears.... My Daddy broke her, I trained her...
I should insert the statement I AM NOT A HORSE TRAINER here. I don't claim to know everything, & I'm not afraid to ask for help. I've just been blessed with some good horses.
Chico turned 4 in March. He's ready to go if I could get my nerves back together. I've been out of it for 4 years or so & I can tell. The speed doesn't come as easy as it did then. But I'm going to lose this weight & learn to just let it go. If he doesn't make it, it's my fault & I will NOT let such an awesome horse go to waste because I'm scared. Period.
Anyway, Enough of that for today.
Enjoy your day!

I thought Mondays were the rough day of the week

Maybe it's just for people with "real" jobs out there. All I know is Wednesday is *not* turning out great so far. Last night I forgot to shut the windows. It was a nice, cool, 70 degrees in my house when I went to sleep. This morning I wake up & I swear its 45 degrees farenheit in my house! I'm on an air conditioner strike as long as I can stand it. My last house didn't have central heating & cooling & I can't believe the difference in the power bill - one month to the next was $40 difference, when all I did was open a window! That & when you leave windows open, you don't get those "house" smells like diapers, whatever you cooked last, or anything nasty at all really. Problem is I keep leaving them open & the weather just hasn't gotten that warm at night yet.
Turned out to be a good thing though, because when I went out the back door this morning to take the trash to the can Untatter locked me out. Yep, my 20 month old locked me out of my house. So I climbed in a window at 7 AM. Yay me. If I had good neighbors the might have called the police when they saw me behind going in the window in my pajamas. Unfortunately, I moved across the road from a person who thoroughly enjoys drama to the point of intentionally lying & causing arguments between the few neighbors I do have. Her parents live next door to her. Yay again.
I guess you get the idea that I'm kind of in a sour mood today. However, my darling soulmate best friend L is coming over with Chinese food this afternoon. So seriously - YAY!! to that. However, since I'm not in my happy place yet, you won't be getting any pictures today. I really only have 2 anyway to take; one of a bracelet & the other of a little motif that I'm so far addicted to. Maybe another one of the suprising book I found it in. But that's for tomorrow or Friday.
Enjoy your day!

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

Okay, pictures as promised :)

So I'm being lazy today. It's Tuesday & Untatter is all snuggly - can't waste that now can I? So since she's snuggling me at the moment, I'm going to add some pictures.
This is my most recent large project. I can't remember exactly the name, but I believe it's either Clover of Field of Clover Doily; designer is Eileen Stafford. I love the look of it but man oh man all those clovers... Thread is Lizbeth #20, color 124 I think. I can't find the label that came on it.Sister claimed this one. Took me 4 months the finish, if you count the 2 weeks I didn't tat while we moved. I should also tell you I only get to tat around an hour a day, usually at night after Untatter has gone to bed.
This is a bracelet I made in about 30 minutes. It's Lizbeth dark purple & some cheap glass beads I got at wal mart in aqua. I like to keep one or two smaller things going at the same time I have a large project going. Keeps the boredom monster away.

This is a hair pin... It was supposed to be black with silver beads, but I was kind of dumb & used white school glue & water to stiffen it. Hence the kind of gray overcast to the stitches. I probably won't make anymore of these with this kind of flower because I can't get them to come out the same way twice. I'm pretty sure it's because the Lizbeth I've been using is kind of stiff in its own right so the petals don't lay the same way they do with Flora. I like Lizbeth for some things, Flora for others, & Altin Basak for still others. I'm kind of out of patience with these at the moment though. I made another in pink/ aqua, & purple/green.
Also, if anybody has any suggestions as to how to attach them without sewing them on with fishing line or hot gluing them, pppppllllleeeeaaaaasssssseeee share with me!! I'm begging!
Okay, that's all you get today. Time for Sketti O's & apple juice :)
Enjoy your day!

Monday

Okay. The wedding is over (thankfully), Mamaw's birthday is settled, & its Monday. Monday and my house is trashed.... But that's okay because I don't have anywhere I have to be today except at home. And the mess won't leave without me right?? Bills to pay today, checkbook to balance, & oooohhh the dishes....
The wedding went suprisingly well. If you knew the back story you'd understand why I say that. Untatter didn't carry her basket slowly & drop flowers like you see on tv, but she did run as hard as she could down the aisle & literally jump into Husband's arms. Cuteness in it's truest form I think, but maybe I'm a little biased. The dresses were camoflauge - yep, & they were nice dresses too. Husband's Aunt made them. If I could sew the way she does I wouldn't bother with a day job, but that's just me.
I still don't have pictures to post. Sorry. I will though, I promise! Definitely tatting, maybe a picture of the dress Untatter wore Saturday, & possibly a better profile picture. The lillies are from my "sample pics" file on my computer.
I made a bracelet to go with the shirt I wore to the wedding, but ended up not wearing it because I forgot to starch it before time to leave & some of the chains were floppy because they had seed beads on them. I can't make up my mind whether I like it or not anyway. I'm thinking of selling it or giving it away. If I could sell my tatting it would be wonderful. I don't have grand ideas of making a living at it or anything, I just want  to make enough to buy thread & beads & such. I'm not a designer for the most part, so I wouldn't sell much of another person's work anyway. But it would be nice to sell a few pieces. Another problem with that is I don't really enjoy making jewelery. I like bigger projects & edgings & the like. I've been working on a few ideas & the bobby pins, earrings, bracelets, & things of that nature just don't make me happy. I love the way the few people that have them get excited about them, but actually making the pieces is kind of boring.
Speaking of that, I have a small gripe here. Back during the Christmas season, I made snowflakes for my sister, my aunt, & a few other friends & family members. Sister took hers to work & hung it at her computer (she works at a bank as a teller). Several of the ladies she works with made such a big deal of that one little simple snowflake. Never occurred to me they'd want to buy them! Well low & behold, one woman (according to Sister) pestered her, wanting that particular snowflake. She wouldn't turn loose of it until finally the woman wanted to know how much I'd charge to make her a set of ten to go on her own tree. Now by this time I could whip one of them out in 20 minutes, starch & all & have it done. I knew the pattern by heart. So I said $20 for a set of 10 snowflakes. That's $2 a piece. This is for somebody I wouldn't have to ship to, somebody who isn't actually willing to pay the price for handmade items. But I thought it'd cover my thread & give me some "stash money".
Do you KNOW what that old hag said/??????? "That's too much for something like that. It doesn't cost that much to make & I know it didn't take her long enough that she's going to charge by the hour. Tell her she won't ever sell anything with prices like that for something as little as a Christmas tree decoration."
Needless to say she doesn't have a snowflake & I wouldn't make one for her now if she was in the desert & it'd turn to ice & melt for her to drink.
At any rate, back to my chores. Pictures tomorrow (hopefully).
Enjoy your day!

Getting in the habit

Just stopping in for a quick hello... I probably won't have time at all this weekend, but I'm trying to get in the habit of posting every day when I get online.
This weekend is going to be a busy one, so I most likely won't be on at all. Tonight is rehersal for Hubby's cousin's wedding, then wedding tomorrow. Untatter (my daughter) is the flower girl & she hasn't practiced at all so we'll see how that goes! Should be interesting. Then Sunday we're having a get-together at my mamaw's house. Yesterday was her birthday so we're going to eat cake & everything on Sunday afternoon. I was a bad grand daughter & let my day get away from me before I realized it. I didn't call her on her birthday. I do really feel bad about it & as soon as I get breakfast done & checkbook balanced, I'm going to call her while I do dishes. Makes it go by faster ( the dishes I mean).
Won't get to much housework today (darn, right?) Because I have to get the bracelet I'm making to go with my new shirt for the wedding done. It's half way there, no problem, right?? :-) I'll post pictures of it probably monday. Yep, it's tatted. I've been playing with beads. More on that later though, as Untatter wants out of her high chair. Breakfast must be over....
Enjoy your day!

Try, Try Again

I tried to make my "first post" yesterday, but it's not showing up today. Pretty sure there were some operator errors, as well as a less than great computer. But if you can see it please let me know. Since I can't, I'm going to make my introductions again, this time in a shorter, less friendly version.
I'm Randa, this is my blog. I'll probably mostly be talking about tatting here, but I do have a family & other interests, so they'll be here too. The reason for mostly tatting is that I have other people to share my other interests with; I don't know any tatters "in real life". I also wanted to have a seperate blog from Intatters, which is an awesome tatting site if you're wondering. Mostly because I have other things I'd like to talk about occasionally (my horses, my family, my life in general. You get the idea). I hope you come back more than once!
Enjoy your day!
